Shane Cox & The Funky Spuds bring a fresh groove to the Twin Cities scene in their mission to elevate the sousaphone and brass-driven music. With a sound that fuses jazz, funk, and a little New Orleans swagger, the band unites some of Minneapolis’ top jazz and funk talent: David Feily (BZ3 Organ Trio, Rhythm Street Movement) on guitar, Pete Suttman (Dr. Mambo’s Combo) on drums, Frank Merchlewitz (Your Smith) on keys, Andrew Gillespie on percussion, and Ryan Freitas on saxophone. Frontman Shane Cox anchors the group with his dynamic work on trumpet, trombone, and sousaphone. Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of genres with bands like T-Square, John Scofield, and Trombone Shorty, The Funky Spuds blend tight grooves, bold brass, and infectious energy.

Shane Cox Trio
The Shane Cox Trio was started in 2023 and adapts and reinterprets music from New Orleans to the Balkans. Shane began his musical journey playing in Boise, Idaho with local bands and also as a street performer. Upon turning 18 he cashed in his college savings on a trumpet, trombone, and a car, and drove straight to New Orleans! There he became engrossed in the local brass band scene before receiving performance opportunities in the San Francisco Bay Area. After moving to SF, Shane began playing cumbia, reggae, jazz, and Balkan brass band shows, constantly expanding his musical vocabulary. Shane relocated to Minneapolis during the pandemic, during which time he racked up millions of views on his Twitch stream performing as a one-man band.
